Maria is the mother of 7 children, 3 of whom are living with her at the moment. She was divorced from the father of her first 4 children, who are now grown. After her divorce she managed to secure some land from the Government on which she started to build a permanent brick house.

Around this time she became involved with the father of her 3 children who still live with her, he helped her build the house. After some time the relationship deteriorated and he threw her out of the house and claimed the house and land for himself.

She sustains the family by working in the fields and cleaning other people’s house. She learned about Habitat from seeing other people in her area receiving houses.
